Zombie March - A Final Update

Zombie March - A Final Update... That Is, Until Enrollment Opens!

I'm very excited to say that my horror writing course, Zombie March, is going to be launched for its first run in just a little over 24 hours! March 31, 2025 - mark your calendars!

As I approach this moment, I find myself naturally equal parts excitement and anxiety. I'm nervous; this is, after all, my first course. But I'm also excited. I've wanted to design and share courses for over 7 years now, and the Zombie March Horror Writing Course is the first of my courses to reach completion. It feels like a huge milestone in my career, especially as I navigate the way in which I want to engage with fiction writing in the long-term. Writing and publishing stories and books is fun, challenging, and immensely fulfilling, but I've always gravitated back to the world of education. I love teaching. And so, here I am, trying to marry these two passions of mine together into something I hope will both be beneficial to my fellow writers and as deeply enjoyable and fascinating as it is to me.

The exciting news is that there's more content in the course as of my writing this - content I didn't even know I would be adding. There are 5 new case studies and 2 new lessons, and I'm particularly happy to note that I do think I've gotten close to the original goal of representing horror from a more global perspective with many of my lessons, though I can also admit that I could always use more global perspective.

I hear that it's natural for course designers and instructors to hesitate when sharing their first course - to feel that it needs more work, needs more polish, needs more content, needs more. I feel that way. It's the perfectionist in me, I think, but it's also the part of me that's worried that I may have made glaring errors in the course, or left out important lessons and topics that I should have included. The thing about that, though, is that I won't know until I've had some time and distance from this project, and a fresh set of eyes to let me know when I've veered away from what matters, or when I've made an error in something. I welcome student feedback in that regard, and I've already started working on an update schedule that will allow me to regularly bulk-update the course in the coming years. Hopefully, this means that one day it will be as polished as I could possibly make it.

As I near the launch of the course, I'm not only excited and nervous, but feeling immensely satisfied. I have poured hundreds of hours into this course over the last few years, and it has gone through at least two iterations. In fact, back when the course was a workshop, it was a lot smaller, with less content, and a whole different approach. You can see what that looked like in the image below:

I still love the style, theme, and progression of the old workshop, and a part of me hopes that one day, if enough students would like, I could do live workshop versions of Zombie March that will function in a similar way. For now, however, the course is largely asynchronous in nature. Despite that, I know that live guidance can be important for writers, especially if they're in the beginning stages of their writing journey, and it helps to have someone to bounce ideas off of, ask questions, and generally get some tips from. That's why I've decided to also include 2 live one-on-one sessions in the course, for each student. These are optional, but generally will be scheduled at the start and middle/end of the course so that students can ask any questions they might have and get the most out of their Zombie March horror writing course experience.

For now, though, there are still some finishing touches that I want to add to the course, so I'll leave this update here. If you want to take the course or are interested in checking out the free preview lessons, keep an eye out on this space or join the newsletter to see when the link drops!
