Review: The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker
I stumbled upon this book purely out of luck when I was searching mindlessly through Google Podcasts for something new to listen to. When I realized that the full thing was on there - the entire audiobook - I had to give it a shot! Needless to say, I loved it. It was fun, it was funny, it was intriguing, and I felt even better knowing this was a self-published book, especially as an author who really wants to self-publish.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
It’s
a great story with a lot of action, humour, intrigue, and suspense.
Also - the plot twists!! They were pretty cool, and I didn’t really see
all of them coming. Without spoiling anything here, I’ll just say that
the protagonist reads as a smart and emotionally intelligent woman, and
the other major characters in the story each had such distinct
personalities that it really gets you invested in finding out how the
story is going to go for them, and how they’re going to fit into the
larger plot as it gets revealed.
I don’t know what else to say
except that this story seems to have it all: a cool fantasy setting, a
great set of characters, betrayal and political intrigue, suspense and
mystery, humour, and an ending that will most definitely leave you
laughing and wanting more. Also, big props for having a female
protagonist that isn’t completely over-the-top or damsel-in-distress,
and can actually hold her own through the skills she does have.
I
listened at a rate of 1-2 episodes/chapters per day until the last
several chapters, which I sort of just binge-listened to all at once
because I was so eager to keep listening.
I enjoyed it, and I definitely wouldn’t have any qualms about reading it again or purchasing the book in future.
