EP05: Reading "Brittle Teeth" - Part One - TRANSCRIPT
Hi! You're listening to Hyba is Writing, and I am your host, Hyba. Today, I decided to do a reading of the first part of my short horror story, Brittle Teeth. I wrote this story about two years ago, I think, and shared it first on Tumblr. If you've been following me on Tumblr for any amount of time, you've probably seen it come across your dashboard, and you might have even read it. I have also shared this on my author website, as well as on Prolitfic. I'll share all the links in the description, so you can choose which platform you prefer to follow along with, if you would like to follow along as I read.
Here's the small summary that I shared for this story: A narcissistic man begins losing his teeth and develops a dangerous psychological fixation with other people's chompers.
Before we get started, I have a few things I'd like to say. First, a content/trigger warning: This story deals with body horror, as you might have gleaned from the title and the summary. If this is particularly disturbing to you, please do not listen to this story or read it. If you do decide to, please proceed with caution. If these things don't bother you, then keep listening, and I hope you enjoy!
Second, I just want to let you know that this won't be a dramatic reading! I'll read it to the best of my abilities, but I'm really horrible at character voices and voice acting of any kind, so you'll just have to bear with me.
The third last thing I wanted to mention before I start reading is a little bit of a disclaimer concerning the wording used in the summary. The main character in this short story is not meant to be an accurate representation or portrayal of a people with narcissistic personality disorder. I say this because I understand that there are plenty of misrepresentations of people with mental illness in media, and I want to be clear here that my main character in this story does not in any way represent people who have been clinically diagnosed with narcissism. In the description of this episode, I've put a link to the Mayo Clinic's page on narcissistic personality disorder, which will give you an accurate understanding of what clinical narcissism is.
Alright, that was all I really wanted to say, so let's go ahead and get started!
