SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide

SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide

A guide to worldbuilding fantasy civilizations for authors and writers.

It's official! I'm working on a gigantic SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide for writers of fantasy everywhere! Read on to learn more and check up on its status!

What is SPLITE Worldbuilding?

SPLITE Worldbuilding is my approach to creating fantasy civilizations! Based on a method I learned in my AP World History class back in high school (SPRITE), the idea is that you use the process backwards in order to create a civilization, rather than the original SPRITE process wherein you break down and analyze different parts of a pre-existing civilization for educational purposes.

I shared it some years back through my social media as a range of posters, and hundreds of people found it helpful, so I'm going to be creating one huge guide that pulls everything together - including the stuff I haven't shared yet!

What can I expect in the SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide?

True to form, my guide is going to include not only the question prompts found in the original SPLITE posters, but also:

  • articles explaining the different elements of SPLITE worldbuilding and how to use them
  • exercises and worksheets for applying what you've learned and building your fantasy civilization
  • examples of worldbuilding in different well-known stories
  • examples from real-world civilizations

What's the status of the SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide?

The guide already has 170+ planned entries and is still growing! Moreover, I will be designing a range of worksheets and illustrations to go along with this guide. Which is to say: there's a lot of work that's going to be going into this thing, so I appreciate your patience and support 😊

When can you expect it to be released?

I'm aiming for a 2025 release, so it's still some way away. If you would like to get a copy of it as soon as it comes out, or as soon as it's ready, please get in touch. I would love to send out some early copies of the guide to anyone willing to review it.

I will update the following "status bar" to reflect how close it is to being completed! The white squares are things I still need to complete, and the black squares are completed parts of the guide.

Right now, we are at 0.5% done.

Questions and Answers

This section will be updated as more Qs come in.
Send me more Qs over on tumblr or IG, or leave them in the comments below.

1. How long will the SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide be?

As of my writing this, it's shaping up to be at least 400 pages long. I imagine it could easily get twice that length by the time it's completed. In fact, as I work on this more and more, I realize that while I will definitely release the full Guide, it might also be a good idea to release different volumes focusing on each aspect of the SPLITE worldbuilding method (ex. Social, Political, etc.).

2. Will the SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide be available in print format?

I would love for this to be the case. I'm still crunching the numbers, though. I'm concerned about shipping fees, as they are quite high where I am located, and would probably exceed the price of the book itself. I'll do a little digging and get back to you ASAP!

3. Will the SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide be available for free once it is published?

No. However, as with almost all of my paid resources, I will be providing a free, downloadable PDF preview of the guide. Currently, I'm thinking of a sort of SPLITE Worldbuilding Guide Lite - something that'll have a little bit from each section of the guide, to give you an idea of what to expect if you're still not sure about purchasing it.

Of course, the posters will remain free, and I plan on putting out the rest of the posters that are missing (the last three elements of SPLITE - the ITE posters). I might even make new designs, spruce them up a bit. But that will have to wait!
